DO’S & DON’TS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR METABOLISM
DO’S:
- Include foods high in iron, zinc and selenium as all these three minerals are required for the proper functioning of our thyroid gland that is responsible for regulating our metabolism. A diet low in these minerals slows down our metabolism as it reduces the ability of the thyroid gland to produce a sufficient amount of hormones.
- Coconut oil is high in MCT i.e medium-chain triglycerides that do not get stored as fat and directly go to the liver where they are turned into energy. MCTs help increase the metabolic rate of the body.
- Pulses and legumes are high in fibre, protein and also certain amino acids through which they help to boost the metabolism of the body. Examples: peanuts, beans, chickpeas, lentils are high in protein.
- Including foods high in protein like eggs, dairy, nuts, legumes and seeds are some of the protein-rich sources that help you to boost your metabolism. As our body uses more energy to digest them, they help to burn more calories. It is called the TEF i.e. the thermic effect of food. Foods that are high in protein help to increase our metabolism, prevent overeating and maintain our muscle mass.
- Water helps to stay hydrated and also helps to boost the metabolism upon its consumption.
DON’TS:
- Eating very fewer calories slows down our metabolism. So try to create a calorie deficit and not eat too low calories as our body senses that and lowers the rate at which it burns calories.
- Protein helps to keep you full for longer and it is beneficial in weight loss as high protein intake increases the metabolic rate even more than fats or carbs and helps to preserve the metabolic rate during weight loss.
- Sleep is very important for good health and if one does not get enough sleep it may increase the risk of diabetes, depression, heart diseases, etc. Lack of sleep decreases the metabolic rate of our body. Therefore getting a high quality sleep at night is very important to help preserve the metabolic rate.
- High sugar drinks, especially fructose-containing, have many negative effects on our health. It promotes fat storage and slows down your metabolism.
