Caffeine improves mental alertness, mood and athletic performance. It reduces the risk of some chronic diseases and is a powerful stimulant for our central nervous system.
• Coffee has a high caffeine content in tea, but its increased consumption has been associated with increased heart rate, high blood pressure, anxiety and impaired sleep. Also, a high intake of coffee may result in addiction or dependency due to its effect on your brain. So if one is highly sensitive to caffeine, tea will be a better option. As it contains L-theanine that helps you relax and has calming properties while keeping you alert. Both the beverages are safe and healthy to consume in moderation, and you can choose between the two based on your sensitivity to caffeine and preference.
• 400mg per day of caffeine is considered safe for human consumption. 240 ml of brewed coffee consists of 95mg of caffeine, and black tea consists of 47 mg. Both the beverages provide the same health benefits of caffeine apart from their different caffeine content. Both the beverages are rich in different types of antioxidants that protect our body against free radical damage.
• Caffeine can impact your sleep and cause insomnia. Higher caffeine intake is directly related to less sleep affecting the quality of sleep as well. So avoid having caffeine before sleep or at bedtime.
• Too much caffeine consumption can have side effects. Although caffeine tolerance depends on your genes. Thus some people can consume much more of it than others without having any side effects.
• High doses of caffeine can lead to nervousness and anxiety. 1000 mg or more caffeine per day can cause jitteriness, nervousness, rapid breathing and increased stress levels. These symptoms vary from person to person depending on their tolerance. As low to moderate caffeine doses increase alertness and are beneficial, but larger amounts lead to anxiety.
