TIPS TO INCREASE METABOLISM
Metabolism is influenced by a lot of factors like age, genes, body type, gender and is not just independent of your lifestyle. Try to focus on these simple lifestyle changes to increase and boost up your metabolism as a cyclist:
- High-intensity interval training: These workouts include bursts of intense activity followed by a short time of moderate activity. Example: Running with maximum effort and speed for 1 minute followed by walking for 2 minutes. It helps your body burn calories not only during the workout but post your workout, thus helping you boost and increase your metabolism.
- Regular Strength Training: When you are training your muscles, you burn calories, but during the recovery period post your workout lifting weights ensures that your metabolism stays elevated for a few hours. Also, the more muscle you develop, the higher will be your metabolic rate.
- Eat enough protein: When you consume proteins, it raises your body temperature, which leads to a higher metabolic rate. (Protein-rich foods increase metabolism through thermogenesis). Start your day with high protein breakfast. Also, include foods like chillies, green tea, capsicum and coffee in your diet as they work on the same principle of thermogenesis.
- Stay hydrated: Have cold water as the body exhausts energy to bring the water temperature up to the level of the body temp, which results in calorie burn. In such a case, warm water is not that effective as your body does not spend any extra energy on it.
- Get good quality sleep: Your body cannot function well without adequate recovery and rest. If your muscles are tired, then it will hamper your training and performance as a cyclist, and that will lead to a compromised metabolic rate.
Try yoga along with these lifestyle changes to fire up your metabolism. These small changes can also prevent you from illness and weight gain along with enhancing your overall performance.
